Where to fish with this rod
Tenkara works best in cold, clear water with room to place the fly precisely. Rods usually run 3.3 to 4.5 m. These are regions where tenkara is documented.
Pyrenees (Spain, Andorra and France)
High-mountain torrents, valley rivers and high lakes with native brown trout and, in some headwaters, brook trout. In Aragon, look at the Gállego, the Aragón and the Cinca; in Catalonia, the Noguera Pallaresa and the Segre. French guides in the Hautes-Pyrénées recommend their streams for tenkara. Dry flies work in summer, and April–May snowmelt brings high flows.
Picos de Europa and the Cantabrian Mountains
Trout rivers in Asturias, Cantabria and northern Castilla y León, such as the Cares or the Sella. Tenkara is documented in Asturias, on medium rivers with open space. On very brushy creeks a shorter rod helps.
The Alps: Switzerland, Italy and Austria
Switzerland has cold, steep streams in the Engadine and Valais, with trout, grayling and char, and room to cast with long rods.
The Dolomites hold marble trout and tenkara is fished around Cortina. Trentino allows it in its trophy zones: barbless hooks, two flies maximum, landing net mandatory and release. In Austria, rules change from water to water because of private clubs.
The Appalachians (USA)
Forest streams with native brook trout, plus rainbows and browns. The Great Smoky Mountains and Virginia’s national forests are reference areas. Streams are often tight, so a long rod takes more care.
The Rocky Mountains (USA)
Colorado’s Front Range offers small creeks, headwaters in Indian Peaks and Rocky Mountain National Park, and high lakes. In Colorado, about 12 ft (3.6 m) is a typical length.
Mountain lakes
Tenkara works on high lakes, where long rods are an advantage. The Pyrenees have hundreds of lakes.
